Organic Food: Luxury or Necessity?

Organic Food: Luxury or Necessity?

More often than not, it is our life experiences that become our greatest teachers. I learned this lesson deeply after losing a near and dear one to cancer. That experience changed the way I looked at food, health, and the everyday choices we make for our families.

Until then, like many people, I had never truly paused to think about where my food came from, how it was grown, or what chemicals it may have been exposed to. But grief often brings clarity. It made me realize that what we eat every single day plays a powerful role in shaping our health.

That realization inspired me to begin my journey of making organic produce accessible to households in Pune through bi-weekly home deliveries of organic fruits, vegetables, and groceries sourced directly from local and rural farmers.

The Modern Food Contradiction

We live in a world obsessed with speed, convenience, and appearance.

We want instant results for weight loss.

We want quick fixes for disease.

We want beauty from the outside.

We want everything to look shiny, polished, and perfect.

Yet often, we choose food based on appearance rather than nourishment.

It is surprising to see people invest carefully in shoes, gadgets, and lifestyle products, while giving less thought to what enters their body every day. Many fruits and vegetables in malls and large stores look flawless—but how long have they been on the shelf? How were they grown? How heavily were they sprayed with pesticides and chemicals?

Perfect-looking produce does not always mean healthy produce.

Organic Food: Returning to Our Roots

Traditionally, our grandparents ate food that was seasonal, local, fresh, and naturally grown. What we now call “organic” was once simply called food.

Organic eating is not about following a trend. It is about returning to practices that supported wellness for generations:

  • Seasonal fruits and vegetables
  • Fresh farm produce
  • Minimal chemical exposure
  • Supporting local farmers
  • Eating closer to nature

In many ways, organic food is not something new—it is something remembered.

Luxury or Long-Term Wisdom?

One of the biggest myths around organic food is that it is expensive.

Yes, the upfront cost may sometimes appear higher. But what happens when we compare that cost with:

  • Frequent doctor visits
  • Lifestyle disease management
  • Medication expenses
  • Low energy levels
  • Long-term health complications

When viewed over the course of a year, clean and nourishing food often becomes an investment rather than an expense.

Health costs delayed are still health costs.

Prevention is the New Wealth

We often wait for illness before valuing health. But true wellness begins much earlier—with daily choices made in the kitchen, the market, and at the dining table.

Every meal is either feeding health or feeding future problems.

Organic, chemical and pesticide-free food is not only for a luxury segment. It is for parents wanting better immunity for their children, adults wanting sustainable energy, elders wanting vitality, and families wanting fewer health struggles.

My Personal Belief

Ever since I began feeding my family cleaner, more mindful food, I have seen meaningful improvements in overall well-being and reduced dependence on medicines. That experience strengthened my belief that food is one of the first forms of medicine.

Final Thought

Organic food, for me, is not a luxury. It is a necessity.

Because in the end, the greatest wealth we can build is not in our bank accounts—but in our bodies, minds, and quality of life.

Health is wealth. And every plate is an opportunity to invest in it.
